Welcome
Thank you for visiting my site. I am an Associate Professor in the Adult Education/Human Resource Development program in the Learning, Technology and Leadership Department at James Madison University. I have a diverse background as a teacher, social worker, researcher/evaluator, and community developer. I am passionate about teaching, working with vulnerable groups, and doing applied research and evaluation work that makes a difference.
I earned my doctorate at Colorado State University in Education and Human Resource Studies with a specialization in Research Methods. As a doctoral student I taught in the Ethnic Studies program, co-directed the Public Achievement for Community Transformation (PACT) program, and co-founded Seven Sisters Community Development Group, LLC. with some wonderful colleagues across the U.S. and Canada. Also while in Colorado, I spent one semester in Varanasi, India with my family. Before living in Colorado, I lived in Missouri and attended Washington University in St. Louis. I received a master's degree in social work, had wonderful research and evaluation experiences at the Center for Social Development and Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian studies, and gained a strong background working with children, youth and families. I received my Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Indiana University-Bloomington. I have a soft spot for the midwest and for IU. Attending such a huge school would have been difficult, had I not been a part of the McNair Scholars Program. Being a McNair Scholar instilled a strong interest in research and now as a faculty member, a commitment to engaging students in research. For students that take my research methods courses I hope you will enter my course with an open mind and repeat after me, "Meaningful research has the power to impact people." I believe that sincerely. For more information about my professional and educational back ground, my CV can be found here.
Me Personally...
I enjoy a full life. I love to put aside research methods books once in a while and just have a great time. Not that research methods isn't a blast. I enjoy books, movies, Zumba, and traveling the world whenever I get the chance. I was raised for part of my life outside of the United States in the Netherlands and I have a serious travel bug. I am one half of an academic couple on JMU's campus. There are only five Brantmeier's in the entire state of Virginia, and yes, they are ALL with me. I am a mom to three busy, sweet , boys who like to get dirty, camp, fish, hike, ski, play soccer, baseball, and guitar.
